The
"D" Notam ~ 4-5-08
- The FAA has recently changed the way NOTAMS are organized. They
now use what they call a key word system. If you use DUATS (I think DUATS
is great), and you happen to look at the NOTAMS section, you either noticed
a change, or found it a little confusing. In the old system, once you found
Rochester DAW Skyhaven, all the notams on DAW were listed in one paragraph.
Now, to make it easier the notams have been split up in different categories
where DAW might be listed in a half a dozen different notam headings...
hmmmm. There's also a graphic for the new "D" notam. Click on it to enlarge
to a printable PDF file. AOPA says, "Pilots
who prefer the previous way CSC DUATS organized notams can call the company
at 800/345-3828 to have their account changed back to the original format."
Taxiway

Fate
Of Biddeford Airport? 3-29-08
- Since 9-11 General Aviation has been going through various levels
of difficulty. After getting beatup with the subsequent tfr's GA airports
are now becoming an endangered species. LittleBrook Airport is now closed
to the public and AOPA told me that Jean Hardy wants to sell it to someone
who's interested in keeping it an airport... Oh my! In
the summer of 2006 Mike and Cheryl Hart put Hampton Airfield for sale for
$2.5 million after 30 years of ownership. Now, the fate
of Biddeford Airport is up for a referendum vote in November to close
or keep it open. AOPA
president sent a letter to the residence of Biddeford. Click on the
underlined items in this article for more information.

FAA
Safety Programs, Seminars, & Information 3-2-08
- Here's more FAA information from Jim Dubois for you reading pleasure.
If you were going down the taxiway and you saw a flashing white light what
would you do? If I was at Skyhaven, I'd key the mike three times to shut
off the REIL lights, unless someone else turned them on. If you were at
a class B,C,or D airport and the light came from the tower you might want
to keep this handy light gun instruction card handy. To download the light
gun card and see more FAA information click on the following links:

- If you haven't checked the safety seminars lately you might want
to take a look at what's coming up. On Feb 7th at Sanford, there's one
called, "Sharing the Skies - Parachutes and Helicopters." It's a fly-in
event at the "Cockpit Cafe." Refreshments will be provide. There's also
another seminar listed for April 3rd called, "Top 5 Mistakes Pilots Make"
that will be in Manchester. Click on the safety logo to get, the rest of

Snowmobiling?
1-18-08
-
Mike McMahon is at it again! When I first saw this picture it looked like
some sort of variation of a snowmobile. But the thrill and excitement that
Mike is experiencing on this machine is something you won't find on a snowmobile.
Besides, snowmobiles are not allowed on the taxiways and runways, at least
not in the recreational sense. What's next Mike? How about paragliding...

This seminar will be held at Laconia airport at Emerson Aviation on Jan
16th at 6pm. Although choosing the right taxiway at Skyhaven shouldn't
be a difficult task, it's a different story when you're at a class B, C,
or D airport. The title of of this seminar is, "Was That For Us?" Click

Tips
On Winter Flying ~ 1-06-08
- Winter flying will add a few more items to your preflight checklist.
Keeping your own aircraft ready for flight can certainly be a challenge
with a month like this past December. But if you're flying with Ossipee
Valley Aviation, much of the preparation is already taken care of. We have
various types of aircraft engine pre-heaters, de-icing equipment, along
with cockpit covers for added protection. You might see some of our planes
missing from the ramp on some evenings because they are put in the hanger
to be ready for scheduled morning flights. Give us a call and we'll get
your plane ready for your next flight.

Final For 33
~ 1-01-08
- More pics from Mike McMahon with student pilot Paul Nixon practicing
landing techniques at Skyhaven. During this session, Mike informs me that
they were working on slipping the aircraft. Included in Mike's pics is
a nice view of the airport from the final approach to runway 33. To see
what's going on in a slip from the pilots point of view, CLICK

Cessna
400 Visits Skyhaven ~ 12-29-07
- So
I'm heading towards 50J to do my preflight and over at the fuel farm is
a slick looking aircraft drinking up some avgas. Although nothing looked
suspicious, it was definitely unusual. I thought I'd find some excuse to
get close to the Lancair/Columbia 400 that was recently bought by Cessna
aircraft. Former airline pilot Norm Jackson was kind enough to share a
brief conversation about the leading edge cuffs and the air brakes that
are unique features to this high performance aircraft. Click on the icon
to see some pics of this beautiful aircraft.
CFII
Julie Bruce & Student ~ 12-27-07
- Julie takes advantage of the beautiful weather at Skyhaven and gives
our Cessna 150 a workout with one of her student pilots. The Cessna 150
has been flying since the mid fifty's and numbers over 20,000 built since.
Everyone
Needs IACRA ~ 12-26-07
- Have you received your postcard about "IACRA"? According to the FAA,
all airmen will need to learn how to use this new computerized program
in order to complete airman applications and is fast replacing the FAA
Form 8710-1. For more information click on the card icon.
Downwind
for 33 ~ 12-23-07
- Here's a pic from Mike McMahon flying downwind with one of his student
pilots, Paul Nixon. Sounds like Paul is getting ready for his checkride
and I don't think the winter is going to hold him back. As you can see
from this pic, the snow piles are rising but we've pushed them back and
ready for the next storm.
Winter
Time at Skyhaven ~ 12-22-07
- Although we are having an unusual snowfall this December, that's still
no excuse not to go flying. Our aircraft are ready to go and the runway
and taxiways are open and ready. Be sure to experience the dramatic increase
in performance when the air is cold and dry. So, get on the phone and give
us a call and we'll have your favorite airplane ready to go.
Stationary
Reservation NOTAM ~ 12-21-07
- In a recent DUATS printout I noticed a bunch of NOTAMS that read something
like: Boston Center issued by Central Alt Res Fac CA [CARF]... that included
longitude and latitude coordinates. My first thoughts were, "what's a stationary
reservation", and can I fly through one. CLICK
HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

12-09-07
- Here's another tip from Jim Dubois on the latest safety seminar
update. This time they are having another seminar at Sanford Airport titled,
"A Must for IFR Pilots! Winter Ops, Icing & Synthetic Vision Systems",
Wednesday, December 12, 2007, starting at 6:00 pm. It's a "fly-in" event.
I wonder if it will be an IFR fly-in or VFR... Click

seminar.
Non-Precision
Approach~ 12-09-07
- Here's an email from Jim Dubois that he received from PilotWorkshops.com.
They have a bunch of pictures and video's that are very informative and
great to watch. The link on the email has a video link on a non-precision
approach and gives a recommedation on descending to the MDA asap and illustrations
to support his reasoning. Thanks Jim for the tip...
Congratulations
To Mike McMahon! 12-08-07:
Congratulations to Mike McMahon on receiving his CFII.
Here's a list of Mike's accomplishments since he started flying with Ossipee
Valley Aviation. PTA, CGI, CFI, CFII, MEI, Tailwheel, Float Planes. Wow!
That's impressive. What's next? Sounds like Mike has his eye on the ATP
rating, and after that... who knows. With the experience you receive at Ossipee
Valley Aviation, there's no limit as to how far you can go in aviation.
Whether you just want to fly for fun, or have your eye on being a captain
on a major airline, we can get you started and on your way.
